“One of just 8 books that I recommend sports

broadcasters should read.”

– STAA CEO Jon Chelesnik

Description

Join sportscaster Mel Proctor on his wild and wacky journey through the world of big time (and not so big time) professional sports broadcasting. Read priceless anecdotes from the world of the NBA, MLB, NFL, NCAA and more. Through Mel’s eyes, experience some of sports’ most memorable and magic moments. You’ll mostly laugh, but you may cry and shake your head in amazement as Mel describes his run-ins with some of broadcast management’s “Knuckleheads.” A fun read that will delight any sports fan and a classic text that should be required reading for anyone thinking of a career in the world of sports broadcasting. I Love the Work, But I Hate the Business spans nearly five decades of sporting fun right up to today.

“Mel Proctor is among the best-ever sportscasters. This book shows why. Mel is as nimble and artful on the printed page as he is on the air. Here are radio/TV’s bright lights and dim bulbs; broadcasting’s pros and cons; and sport’s many sides — funny, poignant, commercial, and above all, human. From the Orioles to Padres, World Football League to Fox TV, Mel has led a compelling life. A terrific read.”
~ Curt Smith, author of Voices of Summer, Pull Up A Chair, and Storied Stadiums

“You will enjoy this read because it is impossible to not enjoy Mel’s company and/or his anecdotes. Many of us do not live a life worthy of a book. That is not Mel Proctor. Mel is one of the golden voices of our generation and I have been so lucky because he and I bonded one hot summer in D.C. Enjoy his hilarious and compassionate life.”
~ From the Foreword by Ron Darling
