In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa climbing partner, Tenzing Norgay, reached the top of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world at 29,002 feet. No one before them had succeeded, in reaching the peak. When this happened, a journalist traveling with the team quickly published the story, letting the world know that for the first time the top of Mount Everest had been reached. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were credited with being the first people on Earth to conquer Mt. Everest. After his adventures, he established the Himalayan Trust to donate money to the impoverished country of Nepal to build schools and hospitals.

He is also a veteran newspaper sportswriter who enjoyed a long career as a journalist and newspaper editor for the Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Anchorage Daily News.
