Description

In Stories of Nature From The Florida Keys, Killam takes us on an intimate journey through her camera lens and written journals into the wildlands at the end of the road — the 120-mile-long string of islands and barrier reefs that make up the Florida Keys. From the continent’s smallest deer to some of its largest birds, Killam artfully captures the secretive and sometimes quirky personalities of the fauna and flora of this southernmost subtropical paradise.

Stories of Nature From the Florida Keys also offers a rare glimpse into the front lines of those trying to protect endangered species and habitats in the midst of rising seas, intensifying storms, and other effects of climate change. But within these pages lies a safe haven; an enchanted immersion into a magical world where herons dance, giants lurk, and the edges of the universe feel within reach.

About the Author/Photographer

Kristie Killam is a photographer, biologist, and environmental educator with 30 years of experience in the public sector, including 10 years with Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges. Her lifelong interest in photography was further propelled while being the point person to maintain the Refuges’ popular social media and website. Her striking images of wildlife and their habitats serve as a voice for nature and inspire environmental stewardship. Now newly retired from federal service, she embraces her art full-time and hopes to continue her pursuit of promoting stewardship while further developing her talents and skillsets. She holds a B.S. in biology from Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. in marine science from the University of South Florida, and a Teaching Certificate from Towson University in Maryland.
