A Little About Sempé in New York

Sempé in New York covers Jean-Jacques Sempé’s entire collection of The New Yorker’s covers. In this book you will discover many unpublished drawings that are available for the first time. Jean-Jacques Sempé also offers a long interview telling how he meandered through New York City looking high and low for inspiration, and he certainly found it. He also reveals how and at what time he discovered The New Yorker magazine.

Sempé’s drawings are made of little more than nothing. They disclose the hidden essence of the people and places and the richness of their detail.  They show-off the wonders of living in such an exceptional city as New York.

Through his eyes the reader sees the large crowds and the smaller ones. A person can almost hear the jazzmen playing, and find refuge in the silent rooms. One would be awed at the skyscrapers and the loneliness found in a crowded park. He captured New York City’s life, places, and activities. Sempé in New York is a must read for those who love the Big Apple and those who love art.
